Andreessen Horowitz, known as a16z, has opened a new office in Seoul as part of a broader expansion into Asian markets, with an initial focus on cryptocurrency. The move marks a concrete step after the firm outlined its regional ambitions in December, when it signaled plans to deepen its presence across Asia.

The Silicon Valley venture capital firm manages about $100 billion in assets. It stated that the Seoul office will support portfolio companies that seek entry into South Korea and neighboring markets. The firm aims to extend its role beyond capital deployment and provide operational support across hiring, partnerships, policy engagement, and media visibility.

Seoul selected as regional base

a16z described South Korea as a strategic base due to its strong technical talent and fast adoption of emerging technologies. The firm pointed to sectors such as artificial intelligence, manufacturing, defense, crypto, content, and consumer products as key areas of strength.

In a statement, the company said to CoshunBiz,

"We selected Korea as a strategic base in Asia, highly valuing the country's global competitiveness, excellent technical talent, and high market receptivity across diverse industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), manufacturing, defense industry, crypto, content, and consumer goods."

The Seoul office will prioritize crypto in its early phase. The firm indicated that it plans to expand into other sectors over time. This approach reflects its recent investment pattern, which includes both blockchain infrastructure and artificial intelligence platforms.

Local leadership and market entry focus

Park Seong-mo will lead operations from Seoul. He serves as a16z Crypto’s Asia-Pacific go-to-market head. He joined the firm’s Asia initiative in December and brings experience from Naver and the Monad Foundation.

Park emphasized the firm’s operational role in supporting startups. He said,

"a16z is focused on supporting the growth and market entry of portfolio corporations beyond simple investment," and added, "We will actively drive our portfolio corporations' entry into the Korean and Asian markets, based out of the Seoul office."

The firm’s model includes direct involvement in scaling companies. It uses internal teams and networks to assist with recruitment, business development, and strategic positioning. This structure has played a role in its early backing of companies that later became major global platforms, including SpaceX, Instagram, Facebook, and Airbnb.

Expansion follows active investment period

The Seoul launch follows a series of recent investments across crypto and AI infrastructure. Earlier this month, a16z Crypto participated in a $355 million funding round for Digital Asset Holdings. The firm contributed $100 million to the round. Other participants included Citadel Securities, Apollo, BNP Paribas, HSBC, CME Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, Optiver, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

Digital Asset develops the Canton Network, which focuses on tokenized assets and institutional finance. The company has reported support for more than $6 trillion in tokenized issuance. The new funding will support ecosystem growth, partnerships, and acquisitions.

In May, Bloomberg reported that a16z led a $250 million funding round for AI search startup Exa Labs, which reached a valuation of $2.2 billion. Exa builds search infrastructure designed for artificial intelligence systems, positioning its product as a search engine tailored for AI applications.

These investments show a dual focus on financial infrastructure and AI systems. The Seoul office may serve as a bridge between these sectors and regional markets that show high adoption rates.

Regional timing shaped by competition and demand

The timing of the expansion reflects growing competition among global venture firms in Asia. South Korea has gained attention due to its developer base, consumer adoption patterns, and regulatory engagement in digital assets.

The firm’s decision to establish a physical presence suggests a long-term commitment rather than a remote investment strategy. Local offices can improve access to founders and regulators. They also allow faster execution in partnerships and hiring.

The Korean market has shown strong engagement with crypto platforms and digital services. This environment creates conditions for early-stage and growth-stage companies that align with a16z’s portfolio.

Broader ecosystem impact expected

a16z stated that it aims to contribute to the local startup ecosystem by connecting its portfolio companies with Korean businesses. The firm also plans to create opportunities for collaboration across Asia through its Seoul base.

The office will act as a gateway for expansion into other Asian markets. This includes support for companies that seek to adapt products to regional demand and regulatory frameworks.

The strategy aligns with the firm’s broader approach, which combines capital with operational support. The Seoul launch places crypto at the center of its initial efforts, while leaving room for expansion into AI and other sectors where Korea has established strength.
