Nikita Bier confirmed on August 25 that X will add crypto trade buttons to its Cashtags feature. The addition would allow users to place orders without switching to a separate exchange app. He made the announcement in response to a user on X who credited his moderation decisions on the platform for the current crypto rally.

Bier rejected that framing.
"There wasn't a single feature on X for crypto traders until I joined," he wrote. "The bull market is starting because the Treasury announced it's buying back bonds and debasing the dollar."
He pointed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision, announced August 20, to expand long-term bond buybacks. Bitcoin traded around $80,643 on August 25, up 4.25% on the day and 24.5% over the prior month. Gold posted its best monthly performance since 1999. Bier, who has disclosed holdings in Bitcoin and gold, attributed those moves to macro conditions rather than platform changes at X.
What Cashtags already does
X launched Cashtags on April 15, initially for iPhone users in the United States and Canada. The feature lets users type a ticker such as $BTC or paste a token contract address into a post. X matches the input to the relevant asset and opens a dedicated page with a live price chart alongside a feed of posts tied to that ticker.
"X has always been the best source of financial news for traders and investors. Billions of dollars are allocated every day based on what people read on Timeline," Bier wrote at launch.
The pilot generated approximately $1 billion in trading volume within 48 hours. X added real-time stock charts to the same system in May. Bier noted that contract address support matters specifically for new tokens, where name-based searches are unreliable because scam projects frequently copy the identities of legitimate ones.
The case for contract address lookup
Scam tokens frequently impersonate legitimate projects by using identical names. Traders have long relied on contract addresses as a verification layer before sending funds anywhere. Cashtags surfaces asset data when a contract address is pasted into a post, which removes one step from that verification process.
Once a trade button is active, a user who locates a token by its contract address could act on that discovery within the same screen. Bier described the product intent behind this in April.
"Our vision is more than just charts. The content on X is valuable & actionable, so trading should be frictionless," he wrote.
Who will build the rest of it
Bier stepped down as product chief this month and moved into an advisory role. The trade button launch now falls to his successor, and X has not announced a date.
Cashtags currently covers limited markets. That scope would need to expand before a buy button could serve the full range of crypto assets discussed on the platform daily. Web and Android versions of Cashtags remain in development, and international availability has not been set.
