Meta announced on September 28 a new business unit called Meta Enterprise Platform, aimed at bringing the company's AI models and agents to corporate customers. Mark Zuckerberg said the platform would bring Meta's "full technology stack, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, Muse Code, and more to businesses and developers to help them grow."

To lead the effort, Meta hired Chirantan "CJ" Desai away from MongoDB, where he had served as CEO for less than a year. Desai will report directly to Zuckerberg in the newly created role of Chief Enterprise Platform Officer.

"CJ is an experienced enterprise leader with a track record of building full-stack software and delivering results in AI, infrastructure, business applications, and security," Zuckerberg wrote.

MongoDB's stock dropped 18% after Desai's exit

According to Google Finance data, MongoDB shares tumbled 18% in morning trading following the news, as Desai departs after less than a year in the CEO role. Dev Ittycheria, who Desai had replaced, will now serve as interim CEO while MongoDB searches for a permanent leader.

Brokerage Piper Sandler pushed back on the scale of the market reaction.

"While the departure is disappointing, we believe MongoDB remains well-positioned strategically and view the share-price reaction as overdone," the firm said in a note.

Desai's path from ServiceNow to Cloudflare to MongoDB

Before joining MongoDB, Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including a stint as President and COO. Zuckerberg noted Desai "has an extensive industry network that we look forward to partnering with."

ServiceNow built its business on enterprise workflow automation, software that helps large companies manage IT operations, HR processes, and customer service requests through a unified platform. That background maps closely onto what Meta is now attempting with its enterprise push: turning AI capabilities into deployable business tools rather than consumer-facing products alone. Desai's brief MongoDB tenure focused on database infrastructure for AI-era applications, positioning him at the intersection of enterprise software and AI tooling immediately before Meta recruited him, which likely explains why Zuckerberg moved quickly to bring him on despite the optics of poaching a sitting CEO within his first year.

Muse's rapid rise sets up what Meta wants to sell to businesses

Meta launched Muse earlier this month as a personal AI agent designed to handle tasks including shopping, booking travel, sending emails, and making payments on a user's behalf. The app has climbed rapidly in Apple's App Store and Google Play rankings in recent weeks.

Reuters reported that analysts have described Muse as potentially the biggest app launch in the US since ChatGPT's November 2022 debut, the release widely credited with kicking off the current AI boom. Meta Enterprise Platform will extend that same underlying technology, Muse, Meta Business Agent, and Meta's coding tools, into products businesses can deploy directly.

Building consumer traction first and then repackaging the same underlying models for enterprise customers is a sequencing strategy OpenAI has also followed, launching ChatGPT to consumers before expanding into ChatGPT Enterprise and API access for business developers. Meta's approach mirrors that playbook closely: establish a viral consumer product, then use the resulting brand recognition, usage data, and proven agent capabilities as the foundation for a B2B sales motion. Whether Muse's consumer momentum translates into enterprise demand for the same underlying agent technology remains to be tested, since consumer task assistance and enterprise workflow integration require different reliability and compliance guarantees.

Zuckerberg framed the announcement as a structural pivot for the company.

"We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses," he wrote. "Meta already serves billions of people at scale and helps hundreds of millions of businesses reach customers. Today we are starting the next major pillar of our business, Meta Enterprise Platform, to help businesses use AI to grow and transform in new ways as well."
