Apple is set to introduce one of its most significant changes to Siri since its debut, as new details point to a redesigned experience embedded deeply into the iPhone interface. The overhaul, expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026, reflects a broader shift in how the company approaches artificial intelligence across its ecosystem.

According to reporting by Bloomberg, the new Siri in iOS 27 will no longer exist as a separate overlay alone. Instead, it will appear directly within the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped interface element introduced with recent devices. When users activate Siri by voice or by holding the power button, a redesigned animation will expand from that area, delivering responses in a more integrated format.

This change signals Apple’s focus on quick interactions. The Dynamic Island mode will handle short voice queries such as weather checks, reminders, or simple searches. Results will appear as structured cards, offering formatted text instead of the traditional full-screen response.

A second major feature builds on familiar user behavior. Swiping down from the top center of the screen, which currently opens Spotlight Search, will now launch a new “Search or Ask” interface powered by Siri.

This interface combines local device search with web-based results and AI capabilities. Users will be able to launch apps, send messages, create calendar entries, and search personal data such as notes or emails. The system will also return web results through an AI-enhanced engine.

This experience relies in part on technology from Google, specifically its Gemini AI model. Apple has chosen a partnership approach rather than building all capabilities internally, a strategy that mirrors its earlier decision to make Google the default search engine on iPhones.

Standalone Siri app targets chatbot competition

In addition to system-level changes, Apple is preparing a standalone Siri application designed to compete with existing AI chatbots. The app will include conversation history, document and photo uploads, and persistent chat sessions.

The design resembles offerings from platforms such as ChatGPT and other competitors. Users will also have the option to route queries to external AI services, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and models from Anthropic. A drop-down menu inside the interface will allow direct selection of these providers.

This multi-provider approach appears to address earlier limitations. Previous integrations required users to explicitly invoke external tools, which reduced visibility and usage. The updated system aims to make those options more accessible from the start.

Camera and system features expand AI reach

The redesigned Siri will extend beyond search and chat. Illustrations show integration within the Camera app, where users can capture an image and send it directly to AI services for analysis or search.

Apple is also testing new AI-powered tools across the system. These include grammar checking, photo editing features such as “Reframe” and “Extend,” and a redesigned Shortcuts system that allows users to describe automations in natural language.

The Camera integration connects to Apple’s broader hardware plans. The company is developing devices such as camera-equipped AirPods and smart glasses, which would rely on real-time visual input processed by Siri.

The upcoming launch follows a challenging period for Apple’s AI efforts. The company first introduced a “personalized Siri” concept at WWDC 2024 but delayed its release in March 2025 due to quality concerns. A class action lawsuit later resulted in a $250 million settlement over claims that promised features were not available at the time.

At the same time, Apple continues to balance partnerships and internal development. While external models like Gemini provide immediate capability, the company is also investing in on-device AI systems to maintain its focus on privacy.

Scale gives Apple a distinct advantage

Despite increased competition, Apple enters the AI race with a significant advantage in distribution. While ChatGPT has reached 900 million weekly active users, Apple’s global device base stands at approximately 2.5 billion.

This scale allows the company to introduce AI features to users who may not actively seek standalone tools. The integration of Siri into everyday interactions, such as swiping down to search, reflects that strategy.

Launch timeline and expectations

Apple is expected to officially reveal iOS 27 and the new Siri experience during its WWDC keynote on June 8. The software will likely reach consumers in September alongside new iPhone models. The designs shown in current illustrations may still change.

“The company often tests multiple designs of features internally, and the final version set to be introduced to the public in June could differ.”

Even with potential adjustments, the direction is clear. Apple is repositioning Siri from a voice assistant into a central AI layer that spans search, apps, and system functions.
